Archbishops at United Reformed College - A first in Cambridge

The archbishops of Canterbury and York are coming together at the United Reformed Church’s Westminster College, in Cambridge, to meet with students preparing for ordination.

Posted on Feb 17, 2008

Friday 15th February 2008. Release: immediate

The archbishops of Canterbury and York are coming together at the United Reformed Church’s Westminster College, in Cambridge, to meet with students preparing for ordination. Over breakfast (on Thursday February 21st) Dr. Rowan Williams and Dr. John Sentamu will discuss faith and society issues with students from the theological colleges and courses of the Cambridge Theological Federation. It is part of a three day joint visit to Cambridge, the first such event that the archbishops have undertaken together.

The visit has been organised by representatives of the theological colleges, Cambridge University and local churches. The archbishops will also be giving a series of presentations, and talking with business leaders and industrial chaplains. It is the first of a series of events over the next two years, to mark the university’s 800th anniversary.

Westminster College was established in Cambridge as a Presbyterian College in 1899. It trains students for ministry in the United Reformed Church.

Westminster College Principal, the Revd Dr. Susan Durber said: “We are honoured to be hosting this event and are glad to welcome the two archbishops. They are both, in their different ways, shining examples of what it means to minister and lead within the church today. We admire their bravery in being prophetic and pray for them as they are caught in the tensions which threaten unity among many Christians”.

The Cambridge Theological Federation brings together the teaching and learning of seven member institutions and four associate institutions through which people of different churches, including Anglican, Methodist, Orthodox, Reformed and Roman Catholic, train for various forms of Christian ministry and service.

The United Reformed Church
Through a series of unions over the past 35 years, the United Reformed Church has brought together English Presbyterians, English, Welsh and Scottish Congregationalists and members of the Churches of Christ. One hundred thousand people make up 1600 congregations, with more than 700 ministers, paid and unpaid.

Although one of the smaller mainstream denominations in Britain, the United Reformed Church plays a dynamic and challenging part in the country’s Christian life. It seeks to work with Christians of all traditions, believing that all God’s people should be one. It is committed to theological and cultural diversity.

Worldwide, more than 70 million Christians are members of the Reformed family of churches, the largest Protestant tradition. We call ourselves Reformed because our churches began to emerge with reform movements in the sixteenth century.
